The intertwined paths of Bob Melvin and Dusty Baker

Of Managers and Men

by Pete Elman

You cannot find two better baseball men than Bob Melvin and Dusty Baker. For decades they have toiled in the vineyards of balls and strikes, from all-night minor league bus rides to first class jets. They spent the 1988 season together on the Giants and have stayed close ever since.

They are both “players’ managers,” and have been players, coaches and managers in both leagues. They each won a title, Baker in 1981 as a Dodger, Melvin as a coach for the Diamondbacks in 2001; both beat the Yankees in the World Series.

They are both California kids; Baker, 72, grew up in Riverside and moved to Sacramento where he starred in four sports. His full name is Johnny B. Baker. “My dad was raised in the South,” he said, “and southern people would go by J.B. or J.C. We were raised Southern-style.”

Bob Melvin, who turns 60 on Thursday, is from the tony town of Menlo Park, and stayed close to home for college at UC. For Dusty, it is wristbands and words of wisdom, while BoMel, as he is called, is known for his steady, stoic, immutable countenance in the dugout. But he is far from your typical baseball guy--he has homes in Berkeley and Greenwich Village.

After a combined 90 years in the show, they find themselves in opposite places. Dusty Baker is at the precipice, one step away from his lifetime dream—to manage a team to a championship. But for Bob Melvin, it’s the eternal challenge to get his team there.

Like so many A’s fans, my patience has worn thin. They cannot seem to get over the hump. Some say it’s the manager. Melvin is noted for his by-the-book style when it comes to bullpen decisions so as to maximize lefty vs. righty matchups, and many believe that he needs to be bolder. This year the A’s were an April contender but an October pretender.

But most believe that it’s all about the skinflint ownership, which unloads stars as soon as they become free agents, thus dooming the A‘s to an endless revolving door of players. And they will not spring for a viable new ballpark, despite ample data to show that the current location is the best option.
California kids Bob Melvin and Dusty Baker

Dusty Baker has had his share of heartbreak. He managed four teams over 25 years in the National League, losing in the wild card once, the NLDS six times, the NLCS once, and most painfully, the 2002 World Series, when his fateful move to pull pitcher Russ Ortiz in the seventh inning of game six triggered the Angels’ comeback from a five-run deficit, the largest in Series history for an elimination game.

In 2020 he assumed control of an embattled yet uber-talented Astro team that was coming off being convicted of the largest cheating scandal in baseball history, compounded by the lack of consequence for any of the players who for years engaged in a shocking and egregious abuse of the game.

When Baker was hired last year, A’s color analyst Dallas Braden said that Dusty was “Hands-down the best move of the off-season, the only guy that can turn this team around.” How prescient. After guiding the Astros to the ALCS in the shortened 2020 season, this season he led them to a division title, defeating the White Sox and Red Sox, both fine teams, to win a pennant.

His managing this postseason has been brilliant, pushing all the right buttons with the lineup, bench, and most importantly the pitching staff, which lost 4/5 of the starting rotation and much of their bullpen to trades, injuries and free agency. And now he stands on the doorstep of history, a championship in sight.

The baseball world figured his opponent would be the Dodgers, for whom Baker won his only title as an outfielder. The 106-win LA team swaggered into the NLCS hobbled but still loaded; arrogantly thinking they could win easily. They didn’t, because of the heroics of Eddie Rosario, Tyler Matcek and Freddie Freeman.

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker is also a baseball lifer; a humble and classy man, he has been a Brave since 1977, studying under Hall of Famer Bobby Cox. Saturday night he avenged last year’s NLCS collapse against the Dodgers, who came from 3-1 down and went on to win the World Series.

It was an upset, to say the least. Ask Dave Roberts, the embattled and much-maligned LA skipper, how he managed to lose a series that everyone in America--except the Cinderella Braves—thought they would win easily.

The third base coach for Atlanta is the respected former Athletic Ron Washington, who twice fell short of a ring as manager of the Texas Rangers. In 2010 he eventually lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games, after being one strike away from the title in game six. “Wash” now has his chance at redemption.

And how fittingly ironic that Dusty Baker will be facing the Braves, the team that signed him as an 18-year old, where he learned at the feet of the great Henry Aaron how to play and act like a big leaguer. He was on deck when Hammerin’ Hank hit number 715.

Along with Roberts, Washington, and Cito Gaston, Baker is one of four African-Americans to manage a World Series team. The circle is now complete. It will be hard to root against Dusty; if anyone deserves it, it’s him. And somewhere Bob Melvin will be watching, wondering when his time will come.

The playoffs have brought us dingers and drama, torture and triumph, rebirth and redemption--and they are not done. Stay tuned. “Baseball,” Bart Giamatti once said, “is designed to break your heart.” Just ask Dave Roberts.

Letters to the Editor

A Voice For The Masses
People always comment, "Oh, Jerry, you wear rose-colored glasses." Let me reply, after tonight's 49ers game, my glasses turned from a "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "A Blacker Shade of Black."

I do love my local teams, and will not abandon ship. But as someone who literally works in a salt mine here in the Bay Area, I feel like I brought my work home with me and poured it into open wounds as the game devolved from the 49ers' dynamic first quarter drive. There's no one person to blame, certainly no one player -- they all played
as hard as they could. I'm sorry, I'm just depressed.

Thank you, Sports Today!, for the opportunity to express myself with this Letter to the Editor before I cry myself to sleep.

Sadly, the Super Bowl-induced euphoria associated with the 49ers' 2-0 start has been replaced by more descriptive words, such as “worst loss of the Kyle Shanahan era.” On Sunday evening San Francisco stumbled badly on a rainy field, losing to the visiting Indianapolis Colts, 30-18. But there were standouts, including wide receiver Deebo Samuel (above). Of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s 27 throws, 11 went to Samuel, and the second-year receiver caught 11 for 100 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers (2-4) next travel to Chicago to face the Bears (3-4) on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 10 a.m.

NBA Must Act!
Word du Jour:
Curryization

By Robert A. Moselle, Esq.

It should come as no surprise to the elite readership of the Ultimate Sports Guide/Sports Today!, where Renaissance athletes, sports media, college sports administrators and sports fans go for more than scores and data analysis, but for in-depth coverage and commentary on the entire gamut of the Bay Area sports scene, that we are now witnesses to a new phenomenon: CURRYIZATION.

Definition: Curryization. Deployment by a team of tactics which go beyond the scope of traditional defense to try and neutralize an opposition player whose ability to score cannot otherwise be stopped. Methods include deceptive, repetitive brutality inflicted in a variety of ways, which are often followed by the offender's protests of innocence with laughable mannerisms and utterances, such as "Who, Me?"

Examples, often concealed with built-in plausible deniability, include The Trip, stumble, eye-scratch, illegal screen collision, head-butt, errant pass (to the face), and choreographed two-player sandwich "accidents."

The NBA has enacted new rule changes to discourage offensive players from making "overt, abrupt or abnormal non-basketball moves." Essentially, NBA referees will no longer reward offensive players who launch themselves into defenders (generally on a 3-point attempt).

This is part of an expanded definition of Curryization, demanded by defenders who could not stop the greatest shooter in the history of the NBA, but who ironically had no problem when "launches" ended with the shooter crumbled onto the court, clubbed by elbows to the head and by knees to "sensitive areas."

It is time for the NBA to enact comparable rule changes to discourage defensive players from making "overt, abrupt or abnormal non-basketball moves" with the purpose of doing physical harm! The Warriors' season opener with the Lakers could serve as a template for Curryization in action.

Unable to stop deadly 3-point accuracy and snake-like drives, players instead decided or were instructed to play ice-hockey with sneakers, and "take out" our #30 at every opportunity.

And who does a better, "shed tear, frown, and play innocent, "Who, Me?'" than a self-described King? It was and is pathetic and was emulated by every player at every opportunity to excuse deliberate, potentially dangerous contact.

The NBA must stop this NOW, or risk injuries to basketball's biggest stars. CURRYIZATION must stop! Don't punish the player who has revolutionized the game but who risks injuries every trip down the court.

To other NBA teams: go find some players who know how to shoot. Don't bludgeon ours!

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes tied Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-1 on Saturday night at PayPal Park. The match also featured a halftime ceremony honoring members of the 2001 MLS Cup championship team.

San Jose had a number of scoring chances in the first half but were held off the scoreboard in part due to a strong performance by Vancouver goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau.

Whitecaps FC then struck first in the 53rd minute. Brian White hit a low shot from distance that was saved by goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski, but the loose ball fell to Bruno Gaspar for the point-blank shot.

The Quakes responded just seven minutes later. Cristian Espinoza played a long cross to 21-year-old Benji Kikanovic, who volleyed the ball far post.

Neither team were able to find a second goal and were forced to take share points.

The Quakes will now prepare for two road matches, traveling first to Oregon to face the Portland Timbers on Wednesday, Oct. 27. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

Roots Top Loyal in 4-3 Thriller to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

Roots traveled down to San Diego for their final road game of the season for another important game as they need to win out for a shot at the playoffs. Unlike the Bay Area, it was sunny skies at kickoff. Early into the game, San Diego sat back defensively as they have in the past against Roots and had a slight edge on overall possession. In the 17th minute San Diego’s Augustine Williams found the back of the net to put the Loyal up 1-0. From there, Roots upped the tempo and began to find themselves in the attacking third more consistently. A poorly passed ball from San Diego defender Callum Montgomery in the 35th minute led to an own goal, putting the teams level going into the half.

Head Coach Jordan Ferrell kept the same lineup to start the second half and Roots came out swinging. Just seven minutes in, Chuy Enriquez scored off a beautiful strike from the top of the box to give Roots their first lead of the game, but they weren’t done. Just a few minutes later, defender Akeem Ward scored off a volley to himself over a San Diego defender to increase their lead. Down two, the Loyal went on the offensive. Augustine Williams netted his second goal of the game to bring the score to 2-3.

By the 83rd minute, Head Coach Jordan Ferrell had used all five of his substitutions to keep the legs fresh but Corey Hertzog found the equalizer in the 86th minute. Tarek Morad received a red card after expressing some frustration to the center referee, bringing Roots down to just 10 men with only five minutes plus stoppage time to go. A foul by Loyal goalkeeper Austin Guerrero on Johnny Rodriguez gave Roots a stoppage time penalty kick. Substitute Jeremy Bokila got the honors and netted it to seal the win for Roots and keep their playoff chances alive.

Roots will return home to Laney College for the final game of the season on Saturday, October 30th against Sporting Kansas City II.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.
